Day 12- Patience

Patience In our hectic lives, it is hard to sit still. It feels as though we are squandering our most precious commodity—time. Advent is a strange time.  We work to prepare our homes and our lives for Christmas (often forgetting how to properly prepare).  There doesn't seem to be enough time to get everything done.  Yet... Day 11- Eternity

Eternity Normally when we think about the concept of eternity, we focus (no pun intended) on time.  The task is daunting. Our individual lives are but a blink in the eye of all humanity... and humanity is but a blink in the eye of all life on Earth... and life on Earth is but a... Continue Reading →

Day 10 – Messenger

Messenger “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for... Continue Reading →

Day 9 – Promise

Promise   I know that this is Advent and not Lent, but I have very recently taken up a daily discipline.  I made a long overdue promise to myself to do something that is rather outside my comfort zone.  I am making a dedicated effort to carve 20-30 minutes out of at least 5 days each week and dedicated it... Day 8 – Way

Way In Advent, we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of the Baby Jesus. We focus on Christ's lowly beginnings in a stable in a backwater rural town. We revel in the miracle of God humbling himself to enter our world in such a vulnerable state. But today's word challenges us (or at... Continue Reading →

Day 7 – Love

Love   Nothing fancy today. As we light the second candle, we move closer to the arrival the Christ Child—and the gospel of Love which He brings.

Day 6 – Kingdom

Kingdom I am spending the weekend with our church's youth group attending a synod wide youth event for high school students.  The theme for the weekend deals with breaking down walls.   And what can better symbolize the power of a king than the strength of his castle (his very real walls). Through the story of... Continue Reading →

Day 5 – Faithful

Faithful   I struggled to come up with how to photograph faithful.  It is not something that can be seen by looking at a still image.  It is something that is demonstrated through our choice of words and actions over time. But... our lives are full of icons representing faithfulness. Dogs Rainbows A wedding band.

Day 4 – Alert

Alert Our cats are both on edge right now.  There is a mouse in the house.  He is apparently moving between the family room and the kitchen.  Our normally sedentary cats are on "high alert."  With every sound, with every motion, with every little thing that is not normal, they become suddenly incredibly attentive to every... Day 3 – Ready

Ready   I am not yet ready to even begin thinking about Christmas this year. The lights are not yet up (typically do this Thanksgiving weekend). There are absolutely no decorations around the house. I haven't even begun thinking about gifts. The thing is, I want to get going... I just cannot seem to find the time. This... Continue Reading →
