Things went very differently today. I don’t know if the changes were from the fact that I increased by another two minutes or something else. I should clarify—from the knowledge that today’s meditation would be two minutes later. The changes were there from the very beginning, not just in the last few minutes.
- I only lost my focal point twice. Each time, I noted it very quickly and came right back.
- The monkey brain tried to pull my attention away, but I was able to see the side thoughts coming in and was (with the two exceptions noted above) able to either completely ward it off or was able to dismiss it quickly without dropping
simultaneous focus on my breathing and my focal point. - The only internal dialog that successfully took root was reflections on the meditation experience itself. I was able to shut down all other thoughts before the first sentence fully formed—thus keeping these side thoughts from evolving beyond the nucleation of an idea.
- I found myself wondering about time a little more often today, but was totally caught off guard when the timer sounded. I was certain it had only been 10 minutes.
I’m not going to push it though. I will hold to 17 minutes again tomorrow.
