Presence
I am glad that last week I chose not to use the communion table as my subject material for the the table theme.
As a species, humans would appear to be unique in the value we place on symbolism and ritual. One of the most poignant of all our Christian rituals is the sacrament of Holy Communion. In the table we do not simply get a tasty meal of bread and wine. We experience the real presence of that which brings us together. Through communion, we do not simply remember and reenact an event out of history. We participate in that act. We rejoin with those who have gone before us. We connect with all those with whom we coexist on this planet. We reach out to all those who are to come after us. We experience the converging presence of all time and all space into the present—into the living and breathing body of Christ.
