Lent – Mass

Day40_Mass

This has been a difficult pair of days for getting photos.  Yesterday, I couldn’t get my head around how to capture the theme.  Today, I couldn’t find a way to go beyond the obvious.

Growing up, “mass” was a foreign word.  It was something the Catholics did.  Lutherans had “church services” or “worship services.” The word “mass” sounded… I don’t know… pretentious.  To be honest, even to this day, I’m not sure exactly what the word means explicitly, but can only guess that it has to do with the gathering of the masses or the liturgy of the masses or something along that line.

Over the last 18 years at CTS, however, I have come to terms with the term.  On our high-holy days, we refer to our worship as High Mass, Festival Mass, Solemn High Mass, etc.  More importantly, I have come to appreciate the pageantry associated with these special services.

Mass now tells me something special is going on.
